"Jerry Bundler"
First published in 1897, this is another Jacobs' story that takes as its subject the creation, and power, of fear. It is an interesting complement to Jacobs' "The Toll-House" and compares very well and closely to H. G. Wells' "The Red Room." This work was one of several of his own short stories that Jacobs adapted for the stage as "The Ghost of Jerry Bundler."

"The Monkey's Paw" [1902]
The main work for which Jacobs is remembered, this is a classic study of Fate (cf Oedipus Rex and thousands of stories and movies since) and, perhaps, of the price Britain is paying, at the turn of the century, for empire.... A must-read for any true fan of the Gothic tradition, this work has also been filmed several times.

"The Toll-House"
First published in Strand magazine in April 1907, this compact gem is a masterwork example of suspense and terror, carefully but quickly building to an inevitable but nonetheless effective climax. It's a near-perfect example of the haunted house motif.
