One of the most important figures of German Romanticism (indeed, German literature in general), Goethe was a hugely influential writer and thinker of his time. He helped lead the way in the late C18's rejection of classicism and the embracing of those literary and cultural positions that came to characterize Romanticism. His classic "deal with the devil" play, Faust, inspired Byron's "Manfred," among others, and The Sorrows of Werther (1774) became a paradigmatic work of Romantic emotionalism and tragedy. Sites:
