Brontë, Anne

17 January 1820 - 28 May 1849

Little sister of Charlotte and Emily who, like Emily, died at an early age. Her Agnes Grey [Project Gutenberg (392K)] is a poignant examination of the sometimes grim realities of life as a governess; The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, with its wonderfully Gothic title, owes (as do many of the works of the sisters Brontë) a debt to the Gothic, particularly in its sense of mystery and its portrayals of an aristocratic life of decadence and emotional brutality.

Anne Brontë - The Scarborough Connection
Although nominally about the link between AB and her beloved town of Scarborough, this site is quite extensive in its coverage; arguably it's the best Anne Brontë site in existence. It features a substantial biography, a chronology, contemporary reviews and other materials pertinent to AB, etexts of her poems discussions of her famous family, overviews of her 2 novels, and links to other AB resources. Highly recommended. [Michael Armitage]
